About Productions creates original interdisciplinary theaterwork that provokes new perspectives on history and humanity. This Los Angeles-based company has been creating critically acclaimed productions and educational projects for 18 years that have been seen extensively in Southern California, throughout the U.S. and in Canada. The company is dedicated to generating new work through collaboration in order to create artistic and community dialogue. Past productions have integrated video and film, photography, choreography, storytelling, music, and innovative lighting design.

Our current project in development, They Shoot Mexicans, Don't They? was presented as part of the Luckman Fine Arts Complex's inaugural season of their Intimate Theater (April,2005). Set in late 20's L.A., this original theaterwork combines dance, video/film, text and music to explore the historic encounter between early Hollywood and Latino culture. It will be presented in Fall, 2006 at the Autry National Center, and the Mondavi Center at UC Davis.

By the Hand of the Father, explores the 20th century experience of the Mexican-American father through text, music and video. Premiering in June, 2000, at Plaza de la Raza's Margo Albert Theatre in L.A., it continues to play to sold-out houses, standing ovations and rave reviews at venues throughout the U.S. and Canada. It was presented in the 2002-03 season of Austin City Limits (the first time the long-running PBS television show has presented a theatrical work), and continues to be featured on this acclaimed music program. This production will tour Texas in April, 2006 with productions at UT Austin, and other venues to be announced.

L.A. REAL is a one-woman theaterwork, written & directed by Theresa Chavez, and performed by Rose Portillo. The piece explores early California history and how this history is now remembered, and incorporates painting, photography, video, and original music. The Arts & Lectures series of UC Santa Cruz will present this production on May 5, 2006.

With our current Theater Program for at-risk youth in East L.A. we are partnering with the Armory Center for the Arts in Pasadena (October 4, 2005 @ 10AM) and Plaza de la Raza in Lincoln Heights (Dec., 2005) to present the theaterwork written by these youth to the public. STAGES provides seniors the opportunity to work with writers to transform their life stories into live theater. This unique program premiered in 2004-05, and will be reprised in 2005-06 at the Culver City (Dec 2 and 4, 2005 @ 1PM) and Pasadena (date TBA) Senior Centers.
