Young Theaterworks Pasadena (2015)

Spring 2015

Our Spring 2015 Young Theaterworks Pasadena program gave students at Blair International Baccalaureate and Marshall Fundamental High Schools the opportunity to:

  • Engage in experiential artistic activities
  • Dialogue with cross-town student peers and theater professionals
  • See professional quality theaterworks
This program consisted of:

Nationally acclaimed poet and intermedia artist Gloria Alvarez, led a series of 4-5 workshops for a classroom of 45 students at each school. These workshops explored the extraordinary life story of one of the main characters in Properties of Silence, Sor Juana Inés de la Cruz, and used her life and our production as inspiration for writing their own poetry.

Culminating presentation at the Pasadena Playhouse’s Carrie Hamilton Theatre

This culminating presentation brought poetry workshop students from Blair High School and Marshall Fundamental High School together to present and share their work, fostering a unique crosstown student dialogue.

Morning Matinee of Properties of Silence at the Pasadena Playhouse’s Carrie Hamilton Theatre

Students attended the About Productions’ original multimedia theaterwork, Properties of Silence, that centered around the troubled marriage of a contemporary couple and the famed 17th C. Mexican poet, Sor Juana Inés de la Cruz. Revered in Spanish-language companies, Sor Juana was a self-taught writer, scientist, and philosopher. This specially produced performance was followed by a post-play discussion with its writers and performers.

A select number of students were chosen to share their work at a special post-play following a the March 27 public evening performance of Properties of Silence.
