Young Theaterworks introduces youth to the importance of writing and the power of communication through artistic expression, honest dialogue, and live performance. We believe that real change is made possible by working with a small group of youth over an extended period of time with a genuinely committed artistic staff.
About…Productions’ Young Theaterworks comes and challenges students – challenges them to write, to speak, to look inside themselves. Young Theaterworks offers unrelenting professionalism, dedication, and belief in the potential of youth to do more, reach higher, succeed. Regular high school administrators and teachers could learn from Young Theaterwork’s dedication and fire for what they do.”
– Howard Gillingham, former Principal, Pueblo de Los Angeles Continuation High School
Our Young Theaterworks program is celebrating 16 successful years of serving greatest-risk youth in high schools throughout L.A. County, primarily in Continuation/Options schools in East L.A. Our innovative residencies improve literacy, communication, and collaboration skills; while integrating and exploring the content from, and collaborative processes used, in our professional productions.
More than a hundred East L.A. highest-risk students have been engaged over the past six years through About…Productions’ Chicano Legacy Project. They’ve mined their community’s rich cultural and political history by interviewing significant Chicano elders, writing plays, and sharing the stage with professional actors to present their original work to their peers and the public. Over the next two years these students a brand-new opportunity to explore and share their Chicano Legacy and for the first time in the 15-year history of Young Theaterworks, create and co-produce a full production premiere of their original work!
Our Young Theaterworks Through the Ages program provides unique 20-session literacy residencies where students interview community elders and create theatre pieces about their lives, thereby transcending generational and cultural divides, and fostering community dialogue and awareness.
Our Young Theaterworks Pasadena program, which was inaugurated in 2012, conducts short-term residencies in several Pasadena public high schools, including Marshall Fundamental and Blair International Baccalaureate. This cross-town program brings our East L.A. students’ theaterworks to Pasadena students with additional related workshops.
The company also conducts workshops for all ages, master classes, symposia, lectures and pre-and post-play discussions in order to share its collaborative process, expand the content of its productions, and engage audiences of all generations.
